Alarming levels of microplastics found in human brains

Feb 06, 2025
Microplastics, tiny bits of plastic, are showing up in our brains more than ever. Scientists are worried because these plastics are in higher levels in our brains than in other organs like our liver and kidneys. The amount of plastic in our environment is growing fast, with lots floating in the oceans. Scientists have found that microplastics are in animals we eat, like pigs and cows, and even in the air we breathe. When we breathe in these tiny plastics, they can end up in our organs like our lungs, blood vessels, and even our brains. Researchers have found that these microplastics can pass through a filter in our brains that protects them from harmful things. The amount of plastic in our brains has been increasing over the years, especially in people diagnosed with dementia. While scientists are still figuring out if these plastics are hurting our health, they suggest taking caution. There are small things we can do to reduce our exposure to plastics, like using less single-use plastic and vacuuming often to remove plastic dust. Scientists are also working on solutions to remove plastics from our environment, like special filters and even worms that eat plastic. Even though plastic is everywhere, scientists are working hard to protect us and our planet from the harmful effects of microplastics.
