First human bird flu case reported in Ohio, Department of Health confirms
Feb 13, 2025
In Ohio, there is some news about bird flu. A farmer in Mercer County got sick with a type of flu called bird flu or highly pathogenic avian influenza. This is the first reported case in Ohio this year. The farmer was near some sick birds that had already died.
The bird flu can be dangerous but the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say that the risk to people is low. This means that most people don’t need to worry too much right now. But there are ways to stay safe!
If you see wild birds or sick animals, it is best to keep your distance. If you find sick or dead birds, don’t touch them! Instead, tell an adult or call a local health department for help.
People with birds at home should also be careful. They should keep their birds away from wild birds. This keeps everyone safe!
If someone has to touch birds that are sick, here are some smart things to do:
1. Wear gloves to protect your hands.
2. Use a mask to keep safe from germs.
3. Always wash your hands after touching birds.
4. Don’t touch your face (like your nose or mouth) after being near birds.
5. Change your clothes if you've been around sick birds before getting near healthy ones.
In America, there have been 68 cases of bird flu in people, but that’s not many. Most cases are in California, Colorado, and Washington.
So remember, if you see birds that look sick or are dead, tell an adult. Let’s keep everyone safe and healthy!
