Measles Outbreak Hits Town in Texas
Feb 13, 2025
In Texas, a sickness called measles is spreading in one town. So far, 22 kids and 2 adults are sick. They did not get vaccines to protect them. This is worrying for many people.
Vaccines are important! They help keep us safe from serious sicknesses. Unfortunately, many kids in Texas didn't get their measles shot. Last year, only 82 out of 100 kindergarteners received their vaccine. This is lower than the usual number of kids who get vaccinated. Experts want at least 95 out of 100 kids to be vaccinated to make sure everyone is safe.
The measles outbreak is happening in Gaines County, a place in Texas with about 20,000 people. Some doctors think that the number of people getting sick may go up. This is because fewer kids are getting their shots. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people stopped going for vaccines, and now, less than 93 out of 100 kids in the whole country are vaccinated.
In Texas, kids must have certain vaccines for school, including the measles, mumps, and rubella shot, called the M.M.R. But some parents can say “no” if they have personal reasons. This makes it easier for kids not to get vaccinated.
When kids don’t get their vaccines, they can get really sick and make others sick too, including adults. Many doctors are now worried that with fewer vaccines given, more kids might get sick from diseases that are avoidable.
It is super important for everyone to get vaccinated to stay healthy and safe. Vaccination helps stop sickness from spreading. If you are unsure about vaccines, it is good to ask your doctor or a trusted adult. Let’s work together to keep our communities strong and healthy!
