Microplastics Could Accumulate in Our Brains More Than in Kidneys And Livers

Feb 04, 2025
Microplastics, tiny pieces of plastic, have been found in our brains more than in our livers and kidneys. Scientists discovered this by studying brain samples from people who had passed away. These microplastics come from the breakdown of plastic items we use every day, like packaging and toys. The amount of microplastics in our environment has been increasing over the past 50 years. These tiny plastic particles can be found everywhere, from the deepest ocean trenches to our bodies. Scientists are worried about the long-term effects of having these particles in our tissues. Studies have shown that microplastics could be linked to health issues like premature births and blocked blood vessels in the brain. Researchers tested tissue samples from 52 bodies and found plastic particles in every single one. Surprisingly, the brain samples had much higher levels of microplastics compared to samples from livers and kidneys. Even though our brains have protection against contaminants, like the liver and kidneys, the levels of microplastics keep increasing over time. People with dementia had higher concentrations of plastic in their brains than those without the condition. Researchers are calling for more studies to understand the impact of microplastics on our health. As our production of plastic continues to grow, we are all at risk of absorbing these harmful particles. It's important to be mindful of the plastic we use to help protect our health and the environment.
