New Study Finds Big Increase In Microplastics Found In Human Brains
Feb 04, 2025
A new study found that there are tiny pieces of plastic called microplastics in human brains. These microplastics are smaller than a pencil eraser. The study showed that the levels of microplastics in human brains have increased by 50% in less than a decade.
The researchers found even higher levels of microplastics in the brains of people who had dementia before they died. These levels were more than five times higher than in 2024.
Most of the microplastics found in the brain tissue were nanoplastics, which are thinner than a human hair. These particles mostly came from plastic bags, food packaging, and bottled drinks.
The researchers are still trying to figure out if the microplastics in our brains are causing any health problems. Studies have shown that microplastics are also found in the environment and in other parts of the human body, like the liver, blood, and placenta.
The researchers looked at brain tissue samples from different years and found that the levels of microplastics have been increasing over time. However, they are not sure about the full impact of these microplastics on human health.
So, while it is concerning to find microplastics in our brains, more research is needed to understand how they might be affecting us. Experts are still looking into what this all means for our health and the environment.
