Ohio Department of Health reports first human case of bird flu in the state

Feb 13, 2025
There's something important happening with birds and eggs! A sickness called bird flu has been found in Ohio, and it's making some people worried. Bird flu is a virus that usually affects birds, but this is the first time a person in Ohio has caught it. The person worked on a farm and had made contact with sick birds. Bird flu can sometimes make birds sick. Some birds may not show they are sick at all, while others can feel very bad and even die. This virus is not very common in people. Most cases in people happen when they are very close to infected birds for a long time, like on a farm. Since the start of 2024, there have been about 68 human cases of bird flu in the United States. Sadly, one of those cases led to a death in Louisiana. The good news is that people in Ohio are still at a low risk, especially if they take care around birds. Because of the bird flu, egg prices are getting higher! People are seeing limits on how many eggs they can buy, and some restaurants are charging more for eggs. Even the Columbus Zoo is taking precautions by keeping their birds safe from the flu. It's important to be safe. If you see sick birds or find dead ones, it's best not to touch them. People working with birds should wear special gloves and masks to stay healthy. However, it's still safe to eat eggs and chicken if they are cooked well. Cooking food properly can kill any germs. So, if you enjoy eggs and chicken, just make sure they are cooked right! Remember to tell a grown-up if you see any sick birds, and let's hope our feathered friends stay healthy!
