Tougher rules on weight loss jabs after people with eating disorders get prescriptions

Feb 04, 2025
New rules are being put in place for people who want to get weight loss injections. Some people with eating disorders were given these injections when they shouldn’t have been. Now, if you want to get injections like Wegovy or Mounjaro, you will need to have your body mass index (BMI) checked in a video call, in person, or through your medical records. You can no longer just fill out a questionnaire or send in pictures of yourself to get the injections. The person giving you the injections will also need to share information about your prescription with other health professionals. This is to make sure it is safe for you to get the injections. The National Pharmacy Association asked for stricter rules after people were getting injections even when they weren't necessary. Weight loss injections help reduce food cravings and can be given to people with a high BMI on the NHS. If pharmacies don't follow the new rules, they could get in trouble. The chief executive of the General Pharmaceutical Council said that they have seen too many cases of medicines being given out improperly online. They are working to make sure that online pharmacies are protecting their patients. The hope is that these new rules will help keep patients safe when getting weight loss injections. It is important for pharmacies to follow these rules to protect the safety of patients. Most pharmacies, including online ones, already follow good practices. The largest digital pharmacy in the UK supports these new rules to improve patient safety. They are pleased to say that they meet the new guidelines set by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
