Weight-Loss Drugs Like Ozempic Can Help Alcohol Addiction
Feb 13, 2025
Did you know there are medicines called weight-loss drugs that can do more than just help people get fit? One type, called semaglutide (you might have heard of it as Ozempic), is helping tackle another problem too—alcohol addiction!
Doctors found out that semaglutide not only helps people lose weight but can also help them drink less alcohol. In a special study, 48 people who had a hard time with drinking were involved. Some of them received the medicine, while others got a dummy treatment that didn’t do anything.
They all spent time in a cozy room that looked like a living room. They could relax and drink any drinks they loved. The researchers watched how much they drank at the start and compared it to how much they drank after getting the shots for a bit over two months.
People who took semaglutide didn’t drink less often than those who didn’t, but they did drink less alcohol overall! This means that the medicine might have made alcohol a little less exciting for them, just like it helps with food cravings.
Doctors say this could be really important because some people don’t want to use other treatments for alcohol problems. Semaglutide is already popular, so more people might be willing to try it. However, the doctor in charge of the study warns that we need to do more research before suggesting anybody use this medicine for alcohol problems.
They are still learning about the best amounts of the medicine to use and if other similar drugs could work even better. The next step is to run more tests with more people!
So, while this research sounds hopeful, it's all still a big adventure for scientists. They are excited to see what they will discover next!
