Al Franken on Political Humor at SNL: 'Our Goal Was to Get Laughs From Everyone'

Feb 13, 2025
Once upon a time, there was a funny show called "Saturday Night Live," or SNL for short. It was all about making people laugh, especially about politics. Al Franken was one of the writers on the show. He helped create silly skits about important things happening in the world. One night, Al was on a plane going back to New York after helping at a party for a man named Michael Dukakis, who was trying to be president. Al looked out at the twinkling lights below and felt proud of how people could vote and choose their leaders. But his friend, Jon Lovitz, was sad. He didn’t want Dukakis to lose to another man named George Bush. SNL was special because it could quickly make jokes about things that happened in real life. For example, after a person in charge said kids should learn about private topics, SNL was able to make a funny sketch about it just two days later! Al and his friend Jim Downey wrote many skits together. They wanted everyone to laugh. They knew some folks understood politics very well, while others didn't. So, they came up with jokes that everyone could enjoy. One of their best skits had a scene where George Bush, played by Dana Carvey, pretended to talk about solving hunger and homelessness. But instead of giving real answers, he just kept saying fluffy words. This made everyone laugh out loud! They didn’t want to pick sides or argue about who was right or wrong. The goal was to have fun and let everyone think about the silly parts of politics. SNL played an important role in making people chuckle while also sharing bits of wisdom about what was going on in their world. And that’s why SNL became a treasured show for so many!
