‘Brain rot’ shows how we use humor as a coping mechanism
Feb 04, 2025
Brain rot is a funny term that shows how young people use humor to deal with tough stuff. It means spending too much time online, especially on social media, and feeling kinda brain-dead. Gen Z and Gen Alpha, the younger generation, use brain rot as a way to make fun of themselves for being glued to their screens. But it's not all jokes – spending too much time on social media can make people feel sad or left out. In fact, too much screen time can double the risk of depression in teens. But despite the downsides, young people still use humor to cope with the pressures of the world. They make jokes about serious stuff like healthcare and climate change as a way to deal with the stress. Even though they seem to laugh it off, they're actually using humor as a way to stay strong and keep going. So, while brain rot may sound silly, it's really a way for young people to show they're aware of the problems in the world and trying to deal with them in their own way.
