Front Porch: Dementia sometimes changes the stories, but Mom's humor is forever

Feb 13, 2025
Once there was a lady named Mom. She was very special and almost 94 years old! Mom had some trouble remembering things. Sometimes, she told the same stories over and over. But once in a while, she surprised everyone with a funny twist! One day, she told her daughter that she was born in the Philippines, but that was her sister’s story! Sometimes Mom mixed up who she took to the mall too! It made her daughter smile when Mom talked. But sometimes, it was hard because Mom felt scared or confused. In those moments, her daughter would hold her hand and say, “I love you.” Mom had a great sense of humor. One time, she said she wore her pink sweater to “look less dead!” Another time, she joked about not having her “racing walker” at the dentist. She and her best friend shared everything, even a tissue! One day, when talking about getting older, Mom said she didn’t wear makeup much. She thought at 88, it didn’t help anymore! She even shared funny advice about boys. She said they liked her because she ignored them! As time went on, Mom still made everyone laugh. She was silly and sometimes mixed up things. Once, she thought a drumming session would involve “what or who” they would drum on before joining! When she saw her grandson, who was very tall, sitting on her lap was tough. She just wanted to be able to walk! And when her daughter talked about a fisherman, Mom leaned in and said, “You know they don’t fish for flies, right?” Mom wanted to be a fun, silly old lady, not a cranky one. She always laughed and brought joy to everyone. Her daughter smiled, knowing Mom would always be her funny, sweet Mom!
