Palestinian American's Debut Play 'The Cave' Offers Dark, Humorous Glimpse At Life As An Arab Family

Feb 13, 2025
There’s a new play called "The Cave" by a writer named Sadieh Rifai. It’s about a Palestinian-American family. Sadieh made this play from her own life. She grew up in Las Vegas and Ohio. This story shows families facing hard times. In "The Cave," we meet Jamil, a Palestinian dad, Bonnie, a white mom, and their two daughters, Dema and Noor. They live in Ohio during a scary time. The Gulf War is starting. People around them are worried and scared. Sadieh wrote the play to show how her family got through tough times. They often used humor to feel better. “Sometimes we laugh at sad things,” she said. She hopes everyone who sees it can laugh too. Even if it’s a little uncomfortable. Sadieh took inspiration from her own memories. She remembered moving far away and how life felt different in a new place. Although it touches on serious topics, it’s also funny! The characters deal with growing up and finding their way during tough times. The play will run at A Red Orchid Theatre until March 16. Tickets cost between $35 and $50. There are discounts for students and seniors. Everyone is welcome to come and watch. Sadieh hopes that people see parts of their own families in the characters. This play is important because it shows a real Palestinian family, not just the common pictures we often see on TV. Sadieh believes everybody, no matter where they come from, can connect with their story. She wants people to watch and enjoy the dark humor and real family moments. So, if you're curious about a family facing challenges in a funny way, maybe check out "The Cave" and enjoy some laughs with them!
