2024 YR4: What to know about the asteroid that could hit Earth in the future
Feb 13, 2025
Hey, kids! Let’s talk about something super interesting—space rocks called asteroids! Scientists around the world are keeping an eye on one special asteroid called 2024 YR4. It’s quite far away, but it has a tiny chance of coming close to Earth one day.
First, what is an asteroid? It’s like a big rock that zooms around in space. The nifty part is that scientists at a special place in Arizona called Lowell Observatory are helping to track this asteroid. They want to know where it is and if it will come near us.
NASA found 2024 YR4 on December 27, 2024. They noticed it shining brightly in the sky after it passed close to Earth. Isn’t that cool? This asteroid is about as big as a school bus! It's roughly 40 to 90 meters wide, which is about 130 to 300 feet!
Now, there’s a small chance, just 2.3%, that it could hit Earth. That means it’s probably not going to, but scientists still want to be really careful. They think if it does get too close, it might land in the ocean or places far away from us.
There are many asteroids out there—more than 37,000 have been spotted! But don’t worry; even if it hit, it wouldn’t be as bad as when dinosaurs went extinct. Some people think it could cause local damage if it hits.
The scientists will keep watching 2024 YR4 for more information. They want to be sure about its path, just like tracking a soccer ball during a game. And guess what? If they find out it might hit us, they have cool ideas to move it away using special space technology.
Isn’t space and science awesome? Keep asking questions and learning about the universe!
