Asteroid skimming by Earth in 2032 could be a threat. Scientists may consider 'spacecraft-based response'
Feb 02, 2025
In 2032, a big space rock might get close to Earth. Experts are watching an asteroid called 2024 YR4. It will pass by on 22 December 2032, but there's a small chance it could hit us. The asteroid is between 40m and 100m wide and was found in Chile in 2024. It's a near Earth asteroid that could do a lot of damage if it hit.
Scientists are studying the asteroid to see if it might crash into Earth. They use telescopes around the world to track its path. Right now, there's a 1.2% chance of a collision. If it does hit, it could be dangerous. But the chance of impact might drop to zero as astronomers learn more.
Two groups are watching the asteroid to keep us safe: the International Asteroid Warning Network and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group. They would come up with a plan if the asteroid looked likely to hit. Even though the asteroid is moving away from Earth, scientists are still keeping an eye on it.
By 2028, the asteroid might get closer to Earth again. If it still poses a threat, scientists might consider sending a spacecraft to push it away. A mission in 2022 showed this could work. So, even if the asteroid seems scary now, experts are ready to keep us safe.
So, should we worry about asteroid 2024 YR4? There's a good chance it will pass by safely, but scientists are watching closely. If it does get too close, they have a plan to protect us. For now, we can continue to explore the wonders of space from our cozy planet Earth.
