Birds-of-paradise use secret biofluorescence to attract mates
Feb 13, 2025
Birds-of-paradise are amazing creatures! They are famous for their colorful feathers and awesome dances. Recently, scientists found out that many birds-of-paradise glow in a special way called biofluorescence. This means they can absorb light and then shine it back in different colors. Isn't that cool?
Out of 45 types of birds-of-paradise, 37 can glow! This sparkle is mostly seen in the male birds. They live in sunny places like eastern Australia and New Guinea. Male birds use their glowing feathers to impress female birds and show off to other males. It’s like their secret magic trick!
Scientists at the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln studied these birds. Their research showed that the males have bright patches on their heads, bellies, and necks that glow under specific lights. This glow is super bright and helps them catch attention when they dance. The female birds also have some glow, but not as much.
Why is this glowing important? Well, it helps the birds see each other better in their leafy homes. They live where sunlight changes a lot because of the trees, which can make their glow stand out in unique ways. The glowing might help them find partners and show who is in charge among the birds.
This discovery is exciting! Scientists knew birds-of-paradise were special, but now they find they use light to talk to each other too. The more we learn, the more magical the bird world becomes. Who knows? Maybe other colorful birds have special glowing tricks we just haven't found yet!
With new tools, researchers hope to uncover more about this glowing world. Birds-of-paradise are not only beautiful; they have secret languages that dance in the light! So, keep your eyes open. You might see something amazing in nature!
