Mars meteoroid strike that set off 'marsquake' helps NASA understand Red Planet

Feb 04, 2025
Scientists use artificial intelligence to study a meteoroid that hit Mars. This meteoroid caused a quake deeper than expected in the planet's mantle. The InSight lander detected more than 1,300 marsquakes during its mission. By studying impact craters on the surface, scientists matched them with seismic activity. They found a large crater in the Cerberus Fossae region of Mars that caused shaking. This crater is over 70-feet in diameter and far from the InSight lander. The seismic waves from this impact traveled through the Martian mantle. This discovery has led scientists to reassess their models of Mars' interior. It shows that sometimes seismic activity on Mars can be caused by impacts, not just internal quakes. Scientists will continue to study these findings to learn more about Mars.
