NASA says that, yes, an asteroid buzzing by in 2032 could hit Earth
Feb 13, 2025
Once upon a time, there was a big rock in space called an asteroid. This asteroid is named 2024 YR4. It is super big, about the size of a small building! NASA, which is like a space superhero team, found this asteroid. They said it might come close to Earth on December 22, 2032.
Now, don’t worry! The chance of this asteroid hitting us is really, really small. It's just 2.3%. That means for every 43 times it goes by, it might only bump into Earth once! When NASA first heard about it, they thought the chance was even less, just 1.2%. But as they learned more, the chance went up a little bit.
NASA is watching the asteroid very carefully. They have special telescopes looking at it. If the asteroid were to hit Earth, it would travel super fast, about 38,000 miles per hour! That sounds super fast, right? If it did land, it might cause some damage to a small area, but it wouldn’t hurt the whole planet. That’s good news!
NASA first spotted this space rock on December 27, 2024, using special equipment in Chile. The team is excited to learn more. They will keep looking at the asteroid through the spring. After that, it will be too hard to see until June 2028.
In March, NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will take a close look at the asteroid. They want to know exactly how big it is.
So, while the asteroid is something to pay attention to, we can relax. NASA is on the case! They are our eyes in the sky, and they will keep watch for us. Space is full of surprises, but we are safe!
