Odds of asteroid hitting Earth went up, but that was expected: What to know about 2024 YR4

Feb 13, 2025
Once upon a time, there was an asteroid called 2024 YR4. It’s a big rock in space, between 130 and 300 feet long! Astronomers are scientists who study space. They think this asteroid has a tiny chance of hitting Earth on December 22, 2032. Right now, the chance is about 2.3 out of 100. That's very small! When the asteroid was first seen last year, the chance was only 1%. But as scientists watched it closer, the odds went up a little. These smart astronomers are using super telescopes, like the James Webb Space Telescope, to learn more about the asteroid. They hope that as they watch it more, the chances of it hitting Earth will go back down. Even though the odds sound a bit scary, there’s no need to worry! Astronomers say we should stay calm. They are keeping a close watch on 2024 YR4 and have plans to keep us safe. If the asteroid does seem like a threat, scientists have special ideas to protect our planet! This asteroid is special because, right now, it is the only one with a chance to hit Earth among more than 37,000 large space rocks that we know about. Scientists give it a score to show how dangerous it might be. It has a score of 3 on the Torino Scale, which is not the worst score ever, but it's still noteworthy. Space agencies, like NASA, are ready and want to learn more about all asteroids. They even tested a spaceship to bump an asteroid to change its path. This was a great success! New telescopes are being built to spot more asteroids, aiming to find 90% of them that might come close to Earth. Even if 2024 YR4 sounds like a big deal, scientists are here to protect us and keep watching. It’s all part of their superhero job!
