'Stranded' Starliner astronauts finally have a return date — and it's sooner than expected
Feb 13, 2025
NASA has exciting news! Astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are coming home from the International Space Station (ISS). They were supposed to be back much sooner, but had to wait longer. They rode to the ISS on a Boeing Starliner last June. But, there were problems with their spaceship.
NASA decided to send them back early on a SpaceX Dragon capsule. It is the same type of capsule that other astronauts have used before. They will leave the ISS with the Crew-9 team on March 12. Together, they have spent more than 250 days in space!
Suni Williams even set a record for the most spacewalk hours for a female astronaut! Even though things didn't go as planned, they made the best of their time among the stars.
Originally, they were only supposed to stay in space for about a week. But due to issues with their Boeing Starliner, they stayed way longer than expected. Boeing had some trouble figuring out how to fix the Starliner. So, it returned to Earth empty after spending three months being checked out.
In December 2024, NASA announced that Wilmore and Williams would use a new Dragon capsule to return. But now, they will use one that has flown before. This change helps everything happen faster. Along with them, other astronauts will also be coming back to Earth.
New astronauts will take their place. They will be picked from both NASA and the Russian space agency. When they are ready to splash land back on Earth, the exact day will depend on the weather near Florida.
So, get ready to cheer for our brave astronauts! They are coming home after a wonderful adventure in space!
