This Fly Larva’s Butt Looks Like a Termite’s Head—and Termites Are Falling for It

Feb 13, 2025
In Morocco, scientists found something surprising in a termite nest. It was a special kind of fly larva. This larva can trick termites! How does it do that? It has a tail that looks just like a termite’s head. Isn’t that cool? These fly larvae are very clever. They even have little tentacles that help them act like termites. They can also smell like termites! This is super important because termites use their noses to recognize each other. The fly larvae smell just like the termites in their home. The scientists were studying butterflies and ants when they discovered these funny-looking larvae. They lifted a stone and found a termite mound with these amazing flies! So far, the researchers think it’s a new species of fly. They have only found a few of them, so it might be very rare. When the scientists looked closely, they saw that the larvae had a special mask on their behinds. This mask looks like a termite’s head and even has little breathing holes that look like eyes. Most termites don't see well, so this helps the larvae fit in. This sneaky trick works! The researchers saw the termites taking care of the fly larvae. The termites thought the larvae were one of them! When the scientists took some larvae to their lab, they noticed the larvae liked to hang out where many termites walked. They might even get fed by them! The fly larvae probably live a special life with the termites. They share a home, but scientists still don't know everything about what they eat or what they will look like when they grow up. This story shows us how animals can be really smart and use tricks to survive. Nature is full of surprises!
