UK to become 1st country to criminalize AI child abuse tools

Feb 02, 2025
The UK is making new laws against tools that use AI to make harmful images of children. It will be illegal to have, make, or share these tools. People who break these laws could go to jail for up to five years. It will also be against the law to have manuals that teach how to use AI to harm kids, with a penalty of up to three years in jail. The goal is to protect children online from predators who use AI to make harmful images and to prevent online abuse. The government is taking action to keep kids safe as technology changes. The laws will also punish people who create websites for sharing harmful images or advice about hurting children, with a possible sentence of up to ten years in jail. The Internet Watch Foundation has noticed an increase in harmful images of children made with AI tools. In just one month, they found over 3,000 of these images on a dark web site. The most serious images also went up by 10% in a year. The government hopes that these new laws will help stop the spread of harmful content and protect children from online predators. These measures will be part of a new bill in parliament to keep kids safe and punish those who try to harm them.
