Congress faces budget showdown with competing plans
Feb 13, 2025
In Washington D.C., lawmakers are in a bit of a tizzy! The House and Senate are both trying to make important plans about money, called budgets.
The House wants one big plan, but the Senate thinks two smaller plans are better. They are trying to help President Trump, who has big ideas for the country. These ideas are about taxes, which means money that people pay to the government.
The House plan is huge—about $4.5 trillion! That’s a big number! They want to cut money for things like healthcare and farming but add more money for defense and deporting people. They think this will help save money in the future, too. However, others worry that it could make things harder for families.
Over in the Senate, they are moving quickly. They want to spend more money on defense and the border, and they are holding back some tax cuts for later. Their plan is like a backup, just in case the House plan doesn't work.
Many people, especially on the other side, called Democrats, don’t like either plan. They say these budgets mainly help rich people and big companies instead of regular folks. Some think these changes could hurt families needing help with things like food and school.
Now, Congress has a tight schedule! They need to sort out these budgets by mid-March, or there won’t be enough money for everything. Last year was a bit messy when it came to budgets, and they want to avoid that again.
So, there's a lot going on! Two sides are working hard, but they need to agree quickly to keep everything running smoothly. Let’s hope they figure it out soon!
