US strikes in Somalia killed ‘key’ ISIL figures, says regional government
Feb 02, 2025
The government of Somalia's Puntland region says the US military strikes killed key ISIL members. President Trump ordered these strikes on terrorists in Somalia. The strikes were in the Golis Mountains where ISIL has a base. The Puntland Security Forces have been fighting ISIL in this region since December.
ISIL is not as big in Somalia as al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab, but experts are worried about their growth. The strikes destroyed ISIL caves and killed terrorists without hurting civilians. Trump criticized Biden for not acting sooner on targeting the ISIL Attack Planner.
The Somali President thanked the US for their help in fighting terrorism. The information minister in Puntland confirmed the attack on ISIL bases in the Cal Miskaad Mountains. ISIL gets money through criminal activities and tries to control local businesses in some areas.
Although ISIL faces pressure from Somali forces, US air raids, and al-Shabab, they are still active in Somalia. They recruit new fighters and spread propaganda. The number of ISIL fighters in Somalia is in the hundreds, mostly in the Cal Miskaad Mountains.
In summary, the US military strikes targeted key ISIL members in Somalia's Golis Mountains. Even though ISIL is not as big as al-Shabab, they continue to operate in remote and urban areas. They fund their activities through criminal means and try to expand their influence through recruitment and propaganda.
