Australia says Chinese fighter jet released flares that almost hit spy plane over South China Sea
Feb 13, 2025
In the South China Sea, something surprising happened! An Australian military plane flew in the sky, and a Chinese fighter jet got really close. The Chinese jet was called a J-16, and it did something dangerous. It let out flares, which are like bright fireworks, right near the Australian plane. The flares came within 30 meters, about the length of a big school bus! Thankfully, no one got hurt and the plane was safe.
Australia’s Defense Minister, Richard Marles, said this was not safe at all. If a flare had hit the plane, it could have caused big problems. Australia felt this was a "risky" move and told both China and its own people that it was wrong.
But then, China had a different story. A spokesperson said that the Australian plane was in a place where it wasn’t supposed to be. They claimed they were just trying to keep their airspace safe and were being careful while dealing with the Australian plane. It's like when you are playing a game, and someone comes into your space. You might get a little grumpy!
This wasn’t the first time things got a little heated between Australia and China. A few months ago, a different Chinese jet did the very same thing. And earlier, a Chinese ship got too close while Australian divers were working. It seems both sides are not getting along very well lately.
Australia is also teaming up with the U.S. and Japan to make their military stronger. They want to work together to keep the seas safe. This is important because there have been other problems in the South China Sea with the Philippines and China too.
So, while Australia is busy trying to have friendly talks, it seems like the skies between countries can sometimes get a bit wild!
