European leaders seek role in Ukraine peace talks after Trump-Putin call

Feb 13, 2025
In a big meeting, important leaders are talking about a war between Russia and Ukraine. President Trump from the USA talked to President Putin from Russia. They want to start talking about peace very soon. Trump said the call was good, and he might meet Putin face-to-face soon. But here’s the tricky part! European leaders are worried. They think Trump might make a deal that isn’t good for Ukraine, and they want to be part of the talks. They feel left out, and that makes them nervous. Germany’s Defense Minister said it's important for Europe to be included because they care a lot about what happens next. Germany and Sweden have helped Ukraine a lot, sending soldiers and supplies. They believe they should be part of the discussions to keep everything fair. They don’t want a peace deal that's forced on Ukraine, and they want to make sure Russia knows it can’t take Ukrainian land. Trump wants everyone to stop fighting because people are getting hurt. But, he hasn’t explained exactly how to end the fight. He even mentioned that maybe Ukraine could become part of Russia, and that worried other leaders. The new US Defense Secretary thinks returning to the way things were in 2014 isn’t possible. He believes chasing that idea just makes things worse. He said NATO, a group of countries that support each other, has to help strengthen Europe’s defenses. Meanwhile, Russia wants to talk to the USA about security in Europe. They are ready to discuss everything, but they haven’t said if European countries will be part of the talks yet. And guess what? China thinks it’s great that Trump and Putin are trying to talk because they believe talking is the best way to solve big problems. Everyone hopes for peace soon!
